Caring for others is a heavy burden
Healthcare professionals regularly encounter grief, death, difficult decisions, and families in distress. Even when the work is meaningful, those experiences can accumulate.
Caring for Those Who Care creates space to recognize that weight, better understand grief and compassion fatigue, and consider practical ways to care for yourself while continuing to care for others.
This evening is designed for:
-
Nurses
-
Personal Support Workers
-
Hospice and palliative-care staff
-
Long-term-care and retirement-home staff
-
Social workers
-
Support workers
-
Other healthcare professionals
What the evening will cover
Built around the wound-care metaphor from Grief Bleeds, Healing in Loss, the evening will explore:
-
The wound: understanding loss as the wound and grief as the pain
-
Shock: recognizing numbness, fog, confusion, and disbelief as normal responses to loss
-
Crying out: why there is no prize for suffering silently
-
Protecting the wound: identifying guilt, regret, shame, and hurtful words that can interfere with healing
-
Applying pressure: the importance of presence, connection, and allowing others to care for us
-
Healing with time: understanding that grief cannot be rushed and that scars and pain may remain even after healing takes place
-
Living with the scar: finding hope and learning to carry loss without allowing it to define every part of life
Healthcare workers spend so much of their time caring for the wounds of others. This evening invites them to recognize that their own experiences of loss may also need attention, compassion, and care.
The goal is to offer a practical and relatable way to understand grief—while reminding caregivers that they matter, they are worthy of care, and healing is possible.
Meet the Presenter
Daniel Verkoeyen is a funeral director, author of Grief Bleeds, Healing in Loss, and co-owner of Rest In Peace with his wife, Audrey.
Through years of walking alongside grieving families, Daniel has seen how deeply loss affects people—and how often those who care for others carry their own grief quietly.
His presentations draw from professional experience, personal stories, and the practical wound-care framework explored in Grief Bleeds. His approach is honest, compassionate, and grounded in the belief that grief deserves attention rather than silence.
